Finding the Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón was one of the highlights of my visit to Havana. Colón, founded in 1876, is located in the neighbourhood of Vedado, Havana. It’s huge – about 140 acres. I wandered around for several hours but still didn’t manage to see all of it. But of what I did see, the place is jammed packed with all sorts of graves, both for the rich and the poor. It didn’t surprise me to learn that space here is now at a premium!
What other cemetery in the world is worth a visit because it’s photogenic or atmospheric?
TAKE ME WITH YOU
You can now download all my Havana articles on to your smartphone or tablet with the GPSmyCity app; for a small upgrade fee, you will be able to read them offline as well as get a city map with GPS directions! Pretty neat, eh
I love cemetaries! Beautiful, peaceful and full of a wealth of information and history!
This cemetary looks so crowded, space being, as you said at a premium. There seems to be so many of those full, ‘coffin sized’ tombstones (is there an actual name for those?) which I find interesting as most cemetaries I’ve seen them in they have been very sparse. Certainly they’re a sign of prestige but I wonder if it’s a sign of a period of prosperity, or were they just seen as so important that people scrimped and saved for them?
The statue of nun with the stork is really neat.
I’m not as well travelled as you for sure, but I did spend a pleasant yet damp afternoon wander the Glasgow Necropolis, which is mostly Victorian and spread out over a hill.
Europe definitely has some awesome cemeteries as well – I definitely want to see that one in Glasgow!
Great post, it looks like a beautiful place (even if it’s a cemetary)!
Thanks, Klees. It’s pretty amazing where one can find beauty!
